With summer vacation here many young athletes will be looking for camp opportunities to help hone their skills. Colleges and high school’s across the state will offer camp opportunities in sports like football, basketball and wrestling. There are also camps for distance runners and one of the oldest is at Luther College which will offer a running camp July 11th through the 15th. Luther women’s track and cross country coach Betsy Emerson is co-director of the camp which focuses on how to run. She says they videotape the athletes and then break it down with coaches to analyze their running technique.Emerson says they talk about the basic mechanics of running and what they can do to improve their form. Emerson says conditioning is not the focus of the camp but advises runners to get a few miles in before showing up, although she says they don’t have to be in top shape coming in. She says they also want them to have a pair of running shoes that’re broken in.The camp is for boys and girls in grades seven through 12 and while the camp does attract state champion runners Emerson it is also tailored for those just taking up the sport.Emerson says several other college and high school coaches will be part of the staff.
