Joyce Schulte hopes to become the first woman to represent Iowa in Congress. The Creston democrat won 51-percent of the votes in the 5th District Congressional primary election Tuesday, beating out Gene Blanshan of Panora and Sal Mohamed of Sioux City. Schulte was thrilled with the win and plans a sort of victory lap of the district. Schulte will face the incumbent in November, republican Congressman Steve King of Kiron. Schulte congratulated Blanshan and Mohamed for running clean, healthy campaigns and for working hard for western Iowa. Schulte says her campaign is about to kick into full gear. Schulte admits she faces an uphill battle because there are 57-thousand more republicans than democrats in the 5th District.Schulte currently serves as director of student support services at Southwestern Community College in Creston.
