A one-block section of Main Street in Independence is closed today following the partial collapse of a century-old building over the weekend. Investigators believe a build-up of rooftop rain water caused the upper floor of the four-story building to fall to the ground Sunday afternoon. Assistant fire chief Rick Wulfekuhle says the collapse damaged one other adjoining building and possibly two others. Three vehicles parked near the building were crushed by falling debris. The century-old building houses the Masonic Temple and an antique shop. The building is one of four conjoined structures that are all over 100 years old. Wulfekuhle says 15 people were inside the four buildings at the time of the collapse. All were evacuated safely. Wulfekuhle says inspectors are being called in to determine the safety of the damaged buildings. Investigators are also trying to figure out if a clogged drain caused the water build up.
