Lawmaker says voters may have to settle impasse on tax cuts

At least one lawmaker says voters may have to settle the impasse between republican lawmakers and democrat Governor Tom Vilsack over tax cuts. Lawmakers want Vilsack to accept tax cuts in exchange for putting the legal footing back under the new state economic development fund. A Supreme Court ruling on Wednesday put the “Iowa Values Fund” in limbo. Senator Jack Hatch, a democrat from Des Moines, says a bipartisan agreement will probably be elusive in an election year.Hatch says it’s time for the voter to decide which way they want this debate resolved. Senate President Jeff Lamberti, a republican from Ankeny, says republicans won’t back down from their position that tax cuts are good for the economy. Lamberti says the definition of bipartisanship is not having republicans simply agree to the democrat Governor’s proposal, but he says that’s what republicans are being asked to do. Lamberti says “it’s not acceptable” for the Governor to say “it’s my way or no way.” Lamberti and Hatch made this comments on Iowa Public Television.
