Iowa’s Secretary of State has approved the registration of a university he has questioned. It was just over one week ago that Secretary of State Chet Culver raised concerns about having the University of Phoenix open a campus in Iowa. The University of Phoenix operates campuses in 30 states, but is primarily teaching students on-line. Culver says he had questions about the university’s graduation rate and the quality of its programs. Culver said he was also concerned about whether a University of Phoenix campus in Des Moines would have adequate faculty and staff on the scene.Culver has now approved a one-year registration for the school in Iowa. In a statement released with the announcement, Culver says he hopes this case will raise discussion among state leaders and the education community about the criteria that’ll best protect Iowa students in these cases.
