The trial for a Black Hawk County man accused of killing his mother and stepfather will be held in Dubuque later this year. A district judge granted a change of venue in the trial of Ryan Johnson. The 27-year-old Cedar Falls man is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Suzanne Harned, and her husband, Richard — a Waterloo police officer. The couple were fatally shot in their Cedar Falls home last September. Earlier this year, defense attorneys asked for the venue change because of publicity surrounding the case and the community’s familiarity with Richard Harned. Johnson has pleased innocent to both charges. His trial is set to begin October 11th in Dubuque.
