Mason City Newman is state tournament bound. The class 1A-fifth ranked Knights edged number two Valley of Elgin 2-1. Newman senior Brian Steil broke a scoreless tie with a homer off Valley’s Andy Seabrooke in the sixth inning.
Newman coach Tony Adams left pitcher John Nelson in the game after Valley had runners on second and third and nobody out. Adams says he asked Nelson how he felt and Nelson said he was good –but a little tired, and Newman went on to win the game.
