Supporters of a new holiday for kids will gather in Des Moines Sunday to celebrate. Mikel Johnson of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa says they’re celebrating what they hope will become “Kids Day.”She says we have holidays for mothers and fathers and pets and other things, but no holiday to honor our children. Johnson says they want the first Sunday in August to become the holiday. She says families are the important structure in our society and she says children are important in that structure. While the holiday would be called Kids Day, she says it should involve the whole family. She says the idea is to spend meaningful time with the family. She says they’ve done surveys and found that children very much want to spend time with their children. Johnson says the effort to create the holiday has been growing among the national Boys and Girls Clubs, and they hope to make it an official holiday by 2006.
