A guilty verdict for a Waterloo man, in the death of his infant son. A Black Hawk County jury this morning took 90 minutes to return a guilty verdict for James Tate, Junior. The 22-year-old Waterloo man was charged with first-degree murder in the death of four-month-old Skylar Tate, in January 2003. Court records show Tate phoned 911 to report his son had quit breathing, but doctors later determine the baby had a fractured skull, internal bleeding, and severe internal injuries. At first Tate told authorities he found his son unresponsive, but later said he’d dropped the child and then tried to revive him. In court, prosecutors charged Tate shook the boy while he cried. This was the second trial for Tate – the first ended in a hung jury last March.
