More details are surfacing after Webster County’s medical examiner allegedly shot and killed a man at his Fort Dodge home. The lawyer for Dr. Daniel Cole made a brief statement Tuesday saying the Sunday shooting was in self-defense. Cole fired the shot that killed Paul Benton, of Fort Dodge — the ex-husband of Cole’s wife. No charges have been filed. Cole’s house and vehicle were searched and he’s reportedly been cooperating with law enforcement. Benton reportedly went to Cole’s house and an argument erupted, ending in the shooting.
