It was not the way Iowa running back Albert Young wanted to start his college career. The New Jersey native expected to open last season as the back-up to Fred Russell, but a knee injury in pre-season camp ended Young’s season before it even started. Young returns this season as a redshirt freshman. “To be playing and then just get hurt, that’s not an ideal way to start your college career, coming off an injury,” Young says. He says “being injured just killed me” but made him “more hungry” for action this season.Young is expected to return kicks and along with Marcus Schnoor he is listed behind Jermelle Lewis at running back. Young’s not sure how big his role will be. “Coach is going to put the ball in the (hands of the) guys who can make plays,” Young says, adding he’ll do whatever he can “to help the team win.”Young was a good receiver in high school and will bring that aspect to the position. “I knew the offense coming here, and I knew they had some offensive groupings that threw the running back the ball, and that’s one reason why I came here,” he says. Iowa opens September 4th against Kent State.
