Congressman Leonard Boswell says the shut-down of the Tama beef packing plant is proof it’s time for lawmakers to do more to deal with “Mad Cow” hysteria. Boswell says action needs to be taken. Boswell is co-sponsoring a bill that would create a nationwide animal identification system to allay fears overseas about Mad Cow disease. Nebraska Congressman and former football coach Tom Osborne is the bill’s co-sponsor. Osborne and Boswell will hold a town hall meeting on the subject tomorrow (Saturday) at the Kinze Manufacturing plant west of Williamsburg on Interstate-80. Managers of the Iowa Quality Beef plant in Tama cited overseas fears about Mad Cow disease in American meat as one of the reasons demand for their products wasn’t as strong as they’d expected. The Boswell/Osborne meeting at the Kinze plant is to begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
