Vice President Dick Cheney talked about gay marriage — and his gay daughter — at his appearance yesterday in Davenport. Folks in the crowd were allowed to ask questions, and someone asked Cheney about gay marriage. As you may know, President Bush has called for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would ban gay marriage. Cheney told the Davenport crowd that he has a gay daughter, so it’s an issue his family’s “familiar with.” Cheney said he supports freedom for everyone, and that includes letting people “enter into any kind of relationship they want to.” Four years ago, Cheney said it should be up to states to decide what kind of marriages to sanction as legal, and he restated that position yesterday. But Cheney said in the Bush Administration, it’s the president who makes policy and that means the Administration’s stated policy is in opposition to gay marriage. The Republican Party’s platform committee is considering an anti-gay marriage plank and some conservative groups have criticized Cheney’s comments in Davenport.
