Iowa State and Iowa will begin fighting over a new prize during the upcoming season. The two athletic departments have teamed with Iowa-based Hy-Vee food stores to begin the Cy-Hawk series which will feature the head-to-head matchups in nine different sports. Iowa athletic director Bob Bowlsby says it will help to draw more attention to what has been a good rivalry. He says there’s always been a lot of attention for football, basketball and wrestling, and this will add more interest. The winner of eight of the matchups will receive two points, the winner of the annual football contest gets three points and extra points can be gained for a strong graduation rate. He says as much as they compete against one another on a regular basis, he says they also collaborate a lot more frequently. I-S-U athletic director Bruce Vande Velde talks football has a higher point total because it goes beyond the state borders of Iowa and there’s a tremendous build up, so they thought it should have a higher score. There are few series like this in the country. Duke-North Carolina have the Carlyle Cup, Oregon and Oregon State have the Civil War and Vande Velde says Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have a series that covers all sports. Hy-Vee will make a trophy that will be given to the winner and C-E-O Ric Jurgens says the company wanted to get involved because of the enormous impact the two universities have on the state. The series is not affiliated with the Cy-Hawk Trophy that was created by the Des Moines Athletic Club and awarded to the winner of the Cyclone-Hawkeye football game.
