A Wisconsin man who was turned down for a permit to build a large hog operation in northern Winneshiek County is moving ahead with a scaled down plan. William Yahnke had planned to build a 48-hundred head hog operation on property he owns north of Burr Oak. However his plan did not score high enough on the Department of Natural Resources environmental matrix. Yahnke is now planning to build a hog operation that’s half the original size, and 100 hogs less than the requirement for a construction permit and environmental matrix score. He still has to provide a manure management plan. Area residents had proposed the original plan, but so far have not commented on the new plan. Construction could begin by the end of this month.
