The Iowa Hawkeyes will start another tailback this week when they visit Penn State in Big Ten play. Marcus Simmons injured an ankle in Saturday’s 33-7 win over Ohio State and will not play. Walk-on Sam Brownlee and true freshman Damian Sims will fill that spot. Hawkeye coach Kirk Ferentz says it’s, “next man in, any man in, whoever’s left standing in.” Ferentz says both Brownlee and Sims did good things Saturday when they came into the game. Simmons becomes the fourth tailback to be sidelined by injury this season. The passing of sophomore quarterback Drew Tate has led the way the past two games but Ferentz says while the pass has been featured the offense has not been revamped. He says they haven’t done anything out of the ordinary, he says they added one more form of play-action, but he says the didn’t run it that extensively. After this week the Hawkeyes visit Illinois and with a couple of wins would put themselves in the hunt for the stretch run. Ferentz says they need to focus on each step in front of them and if they do that they should be invited to the party. He says it should be an interesting five weeks.Iowa State visits Baylor in a battle of teams with oh-and-three Big-12 marks. He says they’ve improved in their rush defense and interceptions and are getting better, but he says it’s time to win a football game. The Cyclone offense must get more productive in the red-zone. ISU has squandered numerous opportunities in scoring territory.
