Four Waterloo men now face murder charges in connection with a fatal shooting in the city earlier this month. Over the weekend, police upgraded charges that were filed against three of the men two weeks ago. On Saturday, 27-year-old Damien Spates was formally charged with first-degree murder. His cousins — 27-year-old Christopher Spates and 22-year-old Ricardeous Spates — had their charges upgraded late Friday. The men were all arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit intimidation shortly after the October 10th shooting that killed 23-year-old Thyanna Parsons. Damien Spates’ 18-year-old brother — Doronis Cooper — was also charged with first-degree murder last week. Police say the shooting started after a fight at a Waterloo nightclub. Investigators believe the men went to “shoot up” an east-side home with the intent to scare people gathered inside. Police say Parsons was an innocent by-stander. She was inside the house, was struck by a bullet, and later died.
