Two teens arrested yesterday (Tuesday) in Council Bluffs are in a juvenile detention facility, facing a lot more than charges of violating their curfew. Bluffs police chief Keith Mehlin says it was about 3:30 Tuesday morning when the boy and girl were spotted in a parked car at a city park. One of the officers on patrol spotted the car in the park so he got out, talked to the people there and wound up finding a weapon on the teenage boy and finding a controlled substance. The chief says the two had methamphetamine. The officer, who says he had to stop the boy from taking the weapon out and handcuff him, says he found the loaded 22-caliber handgun in the boy’s pocket and then found some methamphetamine in the car and on the subject. The boy’s charged with possession of a concealed weapon, possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, and the girl’s charged with being in the park after hours, unlawful possession of a prescription drug, possession of meth and a tax-stamp violation. The chief says what disturbs him most about the situation isn’t the curfew-breaking or even the firearm, but the fact that the teens had methamphetamine. Chief Mehlin says it isn’t so rare to find young adults with the drug but he hasn’t seen it much yet in high-school-age kids and doesn’t want to.
