This day -after- Veteran’s Day is billed as a special research day for veterans and people who are interested in doing research on Iowa veterans. Iowa Historical Society conservator Pete Sixbey is an expert on the preservation of artifacts and is well-versed in World War Two history, in particular. The state library and the reading room of the State Historical Building will be open so people can go in and do research on family history and history relating to veterans of World War Two and earlier conflicts, with records dating back well before the Civil War. Sixbey says he looks forward to helping veterans and other Iowans learn about their roots and those who fought for our freedom. Sixbey says he will focus on conservation and preservation services for any number of artifacts folks might bring in. The State Historical Society has World War Two casualty files, graves registration records, newspapers and newspaper clipping files, photographs, special collections including material on the Rainbow Division, the Historical Society’s War Records Division materials and other materials. Sixbey says he’ll be set up in the atrium to advise people who might bring in medals, uniforms, ribbons, photos and other artifacts on how to best care care of them. The State Historical Building, in Des Moines, will be open today from 9 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. The State Historical Society Library in Iowa City will also be open to veterans and researchers today for the same hours.
