A Spencer native is the latest Iowan to die in the war on terror — in an accident, not under enemy fire. 20-year-old Specialist Daryl Davis was killed Monday afternoon when his Humvee crashed in Iraq. Davis’ mother, Dana, says her son signed up for the National Guard when he was only 17 because it was something he’d always wanted to do. Davis says “He knew what he was doing and he was proud to serve his country and I was very proud of him. He was a very good kid.” Davis says she was contacted by the military while she was still on the job not long after the accident happened. She says one of her employers told her the National Guard had called and needed to meet her at home. She says she knew right away what had happened.Davis says she got an e-mail from her son two days after Thanksgiving that said he was doing fine and looking forward to coming home for two weeks in March. He had joined the Iowa National Guard unit in Sheldon but transferred to the Florida Guard after enrolling in a motorcycle mechanics institute there. His mother says she’s surrounded by family and friends who are remembering Daryl fondly. she says her son loved life and loved riding his motorcycle. He also loved sports. Daryl Davis has two brothers — ages 13 and 17. He is the 17th Iowa soldier to die in Iraq.
