The Iowa Department of Transportation is expanding a program designed to help people navigate the major highways in larger metropolitan areas. D-O-T traffic technician Bob Clark says they’re installing enhanced route makers in the Cedar Falls and Waterloo area that show the highway name and mile marker. He says they want to help motorist know what route they’re on and which milepost. Clark says the enhanced markers are already being used on interstate highways in the Des Moines, Sioux City, Council Bluffs and Quad Cities areas. They’re located every tenth of a mile on the busy state and federal highways which handle much of the traffic going in and around the cities. He says if there is a problem and a motorist needs to call for assistance, they can let the local law enforcement know where they’re at. Clark says they’ve begun putting the new markers up along I-380 in Waterloo, and will then move to other highways. He says that’ll include a short section of U.S. 218 near the south edge of Waterloo, then U.S. 20 is the third priority. Later he says they’ll put more along U.S. 218 in Waterloo and Cedar Falls, and then along Iowa 58 and Iowa 57. Clark says workers are installing the new signs as time permits. He encourages motorist to look for the markers and use them as a reference when calling for assistance.
