World premieres aren’t just for Hollywood. The first-ever performance of “Vatican Two” was held this week in Des Moines. Kathy Cogan is star of the one-woman show portraying Margaret Mary O’Malley, a fictional choir director. Cogan says it’s a humorous look at changes in the Catholic church dating back to the arrival of a new pope in 1958. Cogan says her monologue addresses the changing of various traditions like the saying of mass in Latin, requiring women to wear hats in church or not eating meat on Fridays. This is Cogan’s fourth trip to Des Moines in recent years — she played a nun in “Late Nite Catechism” which had two lengthy runs here. She was also in “The Vagina Monologues” two years ago. This latest show, she says, is an all-audiences performance. She says it’s a 100-percent clean show that you could bring your kids to, while it does not poke fun at the Catholic church like “Catechism” did. Cogan says “Vatican Two” is user-friendly for people of any religion, adding, you don’t have to be Catholic to understand and enjoy it, but it might help. The performance’s world premiere was Tuesday at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines and it runs through December 26th.
