The governing board for Iowa, Iowa State and UNI is meeting today in Ames and gave final approval to a four percent increase in tuition and fees. The increase is part of an overall plan in which each of the three universities will reallocate $20 million in their budget for high-priority items. The four percent increase is also dependent on getting another $40 million worth of suppport from the state. The idea is to try to avoid the double-digit tuition increases of the past and tie tuition hikes more closely to the rate of inflation. The Board of Regents noted that it was one of the first times they have approved a tuition increase without voting in front of a room full of students protesting the move.
