A World War II veteran from Davenport who suffers from Alzheimer’s has been presented with several military medals he earned but was never awarded. Congressman Jim Nussle presented the medals to 86-year-old Delmer Lybarger for his service in the Army. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and earned the Bronze Star, the Silver Star and several other medals. “I never expected ’em,” Lybarger said of the medals. He dismissed the five-decade delay in his awards ceremony as just something that happens. Lybarger’s wife, Joyce, says people like her husband should be honored for serving their country.”We’re proud and we’re sad that he’s here before this all happened,” she said. Lybarger lives in the Kahl home in Davenport which provides round-the-clock care to folks who have Alzheimer’s.
