Monday was the busiest mail processing day of the year, but yesterday (Wednesday) was the heaviest day of the year for letter carriers. Postal workers delivered three times as many letters, cards and packages yesterday than they normally do. Cedar Rapids mail carrier Wayne Volkl doesn’t mind, though, and actually enjoys his role as deliveryman. Volkl says he loves delivering presents and cards and gifts to kids. He’s had some five-year-olds meet him at the door and shout to their mom “Mom, this is incredible!” when they get that package from the grandparents. “It kind of brings a nice feeling to you,” Volkl says of his role. Postal officials say 280-million extra letters, cards and packages were mailed on Monday, and letter carriers say it took them about an hour longer, on average, to deliver Wednesday’s mail.
