The UNI men’s basketball team will be back at the Dome tonight as they host Southwest Missouri State in Missouri Valley Conference play. One of the reasons for the Panthers 11-3 start has been the play of junior guard Ben Jacobsen. Jacobsen leads the Valley in scoring, averaging 18-points a game. Panther coach Greg McDermott says teams may design defenses to stop Jacobsen but he has plenty of help because of the balance on the team. McDermott says they’ve been able to score from all their positions, so if they try to shut down one person, they’ll probably pay for it. McDermott says that one of Jacobsen’s strength is that he knows when to be a scorer. He says if he sees he can’t score, he’ll get the ball to the open man.Southwest Missouri State coach Barry Hinson says the Panthers are difficult to defend because of that balance. Hinson says they’re probably as skilled as anybody in the league and you have to be aware of everyone. And he says they’re one of the best three-point shooting teams in the country. The Panthers are 3-1 in the Missouri Valley going into tonight’s game. The Bears are 1-3.
