Legislators may act to ensure all computerized voting machines in Iowa keep a paper record of the votes that’re cast. Senate Co-President Jack Kibbe, a democrat from Emmetsburg, says federal law requires counties to upgrade their voting machines. “Many of us think that we ought to have a paper trail with these machines,” Kibbie says. The federal government is giving states money, expecting most of the cash will be used to buy new voting machines. Kibbie says in case of a contested race or mistakes in voting, a paper trail would be essential to answer questions. “There’s still some contests out there from the ’04 election in other states where they don’t have a paper trail and wish they did,” Kibbie says.
