Waterloo police have arrested a suspect in the death of a man found last (Monday) night in his apartment. Captain Bruce Ahrends says the case began with the request for a “welfare check” on a man who hadn’t been seen for three days. Arriving at the apartment officers found the tenant, a 29-year-old man identified as Jason Edwin Gage, dead with several injuries to his face and neck — including a shard of glass protruding from his neck. After doing some investigation and getting at least one tip from an acquaintance, police went to question a suspect and arrested 23-year-old Joseph Michael Lawrence of Cedar Falls for first-degree murder. The captain says Lawrence told the cops he’d had a fight with Gage, and had hit him with a bottle and stabbed him in the neck with a piece of glass. The cause of death is being determined by an autopsy, and Lawrence is being held in the Black Hawk County jail. Police say the suspect and victim had known each other before the fatal struggle at the victim’s apartment, but they don’t know the nature of their relationship or how long they’d been acquainted.
