Dickenson County Supervisors have approved an ambitious development plan. The Iowa Great Lakes have been a recreation destination for decades, but with only a little of the shoreline left undeveloped, East lake Okoboji’s become the center of a debate on whether some of it should stay wild. Two South Dakota developers presented the county with a plan that would include 500 condominium units as well as an indoor water park. Critics say the region can’t handle the demand for that much more water and sanitation, and the lake and local roads would be overrun with the additional traffic. But the developers say it would expand Okoboji’s tourism income to more year-round visitation, and Tuesday the supervisors gave the go-ahead by a vote of four to one.
