Congressman Steve King says if he had been calling the plays, he would not have had the President focus on Social Security reform as the opening gambit of Bush’s second term. King, who is a Republican from Kiron, says he would have had Bush open his second term with a push to reform the nation’s tax system. “It would be an easier sell,” according to King, who says Bush is “burning up a lot of political capital” on his Social Security reform agenda. King supports getting rid of the I-R-S and the national income tax. He’d replace it with a national sales tax of 23 percent. Getting rid of Social Security taxes would be part of his plan because King would dedicate about eight percent of the money that’s raised from a national sales tax to Social Security, disability and Medicaid benefits. King’s working with an organization to launch a nationwide media campaign to convince the public that it’s time to junk the income tax and replace it with a national sales tax.
