For the second time in four months, classes are being moved out of a Northeast Iowa elementary school because of a bad odor. Officials are baffled by the sickening smell that has lingered inside West Cedar Elementary School in Waverly since Thanksgiving. The Waverly-Shell Rock school board voted Monday night to keep students and teachers out of the building for the rest of the school year while officials work to pinpoint the source. In December, district officials canceled classes at West Cedar for three days while crews scrubbed the walls and cleaned the building’s air ducts. When the odor remained, classes were temporarily relocated to a nearby church and the public library. Workers did more cleaning, but the smell didn’t go away. Now, district officials have decided to relocate classes again — this time to other district buildings. Air quality tests have determined the odor poses no health risks, but some students and teachers have complained of feeling ill.
