Across Iowa and around the world, tens of millions watched this morning’s televised funeral for Pope John Paul. Special masses are being held today, including at the tiny church near Cumming where the pope held a prayer service during his 1979 Iowa visit. A memorial mass was held last night at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Webster City, led by Father John Flaherty. Father Flaherty was happy with the turnout and says they’re very thankful for all of the cards, letters, flowers and e-mail everyone has sent from around the community. Flaherty says it’s a sad time as devoted Catholics say goodbye to their church’s leader. He says it’s also a time to think of the wonderful things the pope did during his life and to be joyful, knowing that the pope is now at peace, he’s no longer being troubled by health problems and he’s joined the saints in heaven.
