Greenfield residents go to the polls again on tax issue

Less than six months after saying “no” to a local option sales tax, Greenfield residents go back to the polls Tuesday. On November 30th, all of Adair County accepted a one-percent sales tax, except Greenfield, the county seat. Ginny Kuhfus, Executive Director of Greenfield’s Chamber/Main Street Organization didn’t expect that result. “I was real surprised that it did not pass the first time. I think we all just assumed our neighbor was voting, and several people said “Oh, I forgot to vote” after they realized it didn’t pass.” Kuhfus says backers have made a strong effort to explain why the city needs the funds from the tax. Kuhfus says local businesses don’t object to the tax plan. Kuhfus says “They have all been in support, I haven’t heard any talk against it at this point, because I think we all realize this is an important thing.” Kuhfus expects a different result from Tuesday’s vote. She says “I think now that they’ve realized all the other towns around the area are supporting it people are understanding what it’s for this time, so they’re really more supportive.” Around 250 Greenfield residents cast ballots in the original referendum, or about 15-percent of voters, a fair turn-out for a single-question ballot.
