Today’s the first full day of testimony in the second trial of Fairfield insurance agent Larry Smith Junior, who faces more than two-dozen counts of incest and sexual abuse — all involving his daughter. Smith’s first trial ended in mistrial after the jury couldn’t reach a verdict following at least two days of deliberation. Another mistrial was filed yesterday on behalf of Smith’s defense, saying some jurors comments were out of line, but the motion was denied. Following yesterday’s opening arguments, Smith’s 19-year-old daughter testified and painted her father as controlling and manipulative, saying he didn’t even want her to go to college because she could meet “other boys” there. The 42-year-old Smith faces numerous counts for allegedly abusing the girl, beginning several years ago and ending in the spring of 2003 when the allegations finally came to light. Testimony today from the prosecution could include some witnesses who are new to the case.
