Austin Flynn’s move from quarterback to wide receiver has opened the door for Kyle Van Winkle. The redshirt junior from Story City is battling to become the backup to Bret Meyer. He is currently listed second on the depth chart heading into the Cyclones annual spring game on Saturday. Van Winkle says quarterbacks coach Todd Fitch told him they wanted him to compete for the quarterback job after deciding to move Austin Flynn to receiver. He says he is just trying to make the most of the opportunity. His goal this spring is to become consistent. He says he’s thrown the ball pretty well this spring and is just working to make the right reads and make good throws. Cyclone coach Dan McCarney says having a backup prepared to take the field next season, if needed, is one of their goals this spring. Van Winkle currently has an edge on Terrance Highsmith for the number-two spot.McCarney says a quality backup needs to emerge because they have no plans to move Flynn back to the quarterback spot.
