An eastern Iowa man found out — the hard way — that shooting wild turkeys after sunset is illegal in Iowa. 45-year-old Timothy Erwin of Blue Grass was fined last weekend for blasting a big bird just past 8 p-m, when the sun went down about ten minutes prior. Muscatine County conservation officer Tom Campbell says if you want to hunt wild turkeys, you must get educated about the process. Campbell says there are a number of different rules and regulations about firearms and other issues, all of which are outlined on the state Department of Natural Resources’ website, “iowadnr.com”. He says Erwin was charged after someone called the state’s poachers hotline and reported seeing someone shooting the turkey.Campbell says Erwin was cited for shooting a turkey after hours and for not having a transportation tag. Campbell says a shotgun and the turkey were recovered, adding, that tag is important. He says you’re allowed to shoot one turkey per license and during the spring hunting season, you’re allowed to have up to two licenses.
