University of Iowa officials are trying to ensure the Hawkeye t-shirt you buy isn’t made with child labor. University of Iowa officials are sending notices to retailers and suppliers of products that bear a U-of-I logo, urging them to ensure the products are made in factories that practice fair labor standards. An international fair labor agreement expired at the end of 2004. Analysts say the result is a shift in the textile and garment industries to countries where child labor or even prison labor is used in factories. University of Iowa president David Skorton is encouraging retailers who sell stuff with the Tigerhawk logo, the Old Capitol dome or anything with University of Iowa stamped on it to refrain from buying those products from low-wage countries.
