A higher court’s reversed the probation given to an Iowa man with eleven drunk-driving convictions. Melvin Rice of Sioux City was sentenced to three years probation after a plea bargain reduced his twelfth DUI charge to driving with a revoked license. A deputy said when Rice was stopped in Dakota County, Nebraska, he had an open container of whiskey, was too drunk for a sobriety test and could hardly stand. His blood alcohol tested at nearly four times the legal limit. Now the Nebraska Supreme Court has overturned the sentence of probation, saying it’s too lenient for the longtime offender and shows disrespect for the law.
