A Farley dairy farmer who was supposed to start serving prison time for his conviction of intentionally polluting a creek with manure has apparently taken his own life. 50-year-old Carl Simon was found early Wednesday morning in a running vehicle parked inside his garage. Simon was convicted in December of knowingly discharging a pollutant into a creek without a permit. The creek is a tributary of the Little Maquoketa River. Simon was accused of digging a drainage ditch from his manure basin to the creek. He was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison and was scheduled to begin his sentence Wednesday — the day he was found dead.
