The start of the Iowa Conference baseball tournament in Cedar Rapids has been delayed by rain. The opener between regular season champion Wartburg and the University of Dubuque has been moved to late this afternoon and tonight Central will play Simpson. The last first round game, matching Coe and Buena Vista, will be played at nine tomorrow morning. Iowa Conference commissioner John Cochrane says they’re considering another site to get all the games in as the tournament must be completed by six on Sunday so the division-three regionals can be set. He says they’ll play as much baseball as they can and stick with the double-elimination format as tightly as they can. He says they’ll know by mid-morning on Saturday whether or not they’ll be able to complete the tournament. Cochrane says more rain could force additional changes. He says the worst case scenario is that they eliminate some of the losers bracket games. Cochrane says they would like to play the entire tournament but the first goal is to crown a champion so they can determine who gets the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. He says they want to do everything they can to determine the champion on the field. The tournament is being held at Veterans Stadium.
