A Minnesota man accused of causing a fatal accident two year ago in Waterloo — and then fleeing the country — is back in Iowa. Damir Mekic was visiting friends in the Waterloo area in April, 2003, when police say he ran a red light and slammed into a car carrying four teenagers from Traer on their prom night. The teens were all students at North Tama High School. The crash killed 18-year-old Keely Lyons, and injured the other three. Officials say Mekic was drink at the time of the accident. He was charged with vehicular homicide and driving with a suspended license, but fled to Europe after posting bond. Mekic was captured last year while trying to cross the border from Bosnia to Serbia. Recently, a Serbian court cleared the way for the 23-year-old Mekic to return to Iowa to stand trial. Last week, two deputy marshals went to Serbia to pick up Mekic and bring him back to Waterloo. His trial date hasn’t been set.
