Four National Guard soldiers from eastern Iowa were injured in two separate attacks this past weekend in Iraq. All four soldiers serve in the engineering battalion based in Mount Pleasant. The first attack happened Friday. Three of the soldiers were injured when a bomb destroyed their armored personnel carrier. Twenty-seven-year-old David Hinkle of Mount Union was hit by shrapnel. He’s in a military hospital in Germany right now; he’ll be transferred to a hospital in the states soon. Twenty-one-year-old Steven Flanagan of Marion and 20-year-old Jacob Shumaker of Wayland were treated in Iraq and have already returned to duty. The second attack happend Sunday. Another bomb exploded near another armored personnel carrier, injuring 24-year-old Michael Mortimer of Montrose. He, too, had his wounds tended to in Iraq and is back on duty.
