Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids will get the memorial day weekend started with a couple of special events top go along with its regular weekly schedule this evening. In honor of the “Indianapolis 500”, general manager Jim Amstutz says the track will hold the “Undie 500”. He says a local go-cart track will bring the carts out and they’ll have local celebrities race around in their underwear. The local foodbank is the charity for the event. Fans of race cars from years gone-by will also get a chance to travel down memory lane with another special event. There’s an eastern Iowa group called the “Nostalgia Stocks” that have restored old cars or build replicas of them. Amstutz says with Memorial Day weekend being viewed as the start of summer it is a time when interest in racing starts to build. He says in the 1960’s and 70’s tracks started their seasons on Memorial Day and ended on Labor Day. Racing begins at seven.
