Military medics from a southeast Iowa National Guard unit are being called to active duty. Ninety soldiers from the 134th Medical Company based in Washington, Iowa, will be on active duty for 18 months, starting in August. The soldiers will first report for training in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, then be deployed overseas, although the news release from the Iowa National Guard does not say exactly where the soldiers will be stationed. The unit essentially provides military ambulance services, evaluating casulaties in the field, offering basic care there and then tranporting the wounded to field hospitals. This Washington, Iowa-based unit was last deployed in 1990, during Desert Storm.
