The Department of Natural Resources is offering a $2000 reward for information that’ll help the agency track down whoever shot a swan this spring in north-central Iowa. The DNR’s Dave Hoffman says the female trumpeter swan had been released south of Clear lake about a year ago. It stayed the winter and was back at Union Hill south of Clear Lake again this spring. He got a phoned report recently that it was spotted near Crystal Lake but went to retrieve it only to find the bird had been shot. Hoffman, a wildlife technician for the DNR, says despite efforts to save it the bird died shortly after it was found. Hoffman says they found at least 18 BB-sized pellets in the bird, leaving no doubt it had been shot. It had suffered a broken wing and broken ribs, and Hoffman calls the death a tragic setback to the effort to restore the trumpeter swan population in the state. He says it’s not just the DNR losing out but the people, as the public’s favored restoring the birds and donated around the state for the effort. Hoffman says a reward is being offered through the “Turn In Poachers” program. The TIP report number is 1-800-532-2002 and callers may remain anonymous. A person convicted of shooting a swan could face a fine of up to 15-hundred dollars and revocation of their hunting license.
