A soldier from western Iowa’s Crawford County has been killed in Iraq. 22-year-old Specialist Casey Byers of Schleswig was killed Saturday night when a bomb exploded beneath his armored Humvee near Ramadi. Byers was part of a convoy that was searching for roadside bombs and insurgents when the attack occurred. Byers was raised in Vail and graduated from Ar-we-va High school in 2001. He then attended Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, graduating in 2003. In December of 1999, Byers enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard joining the Company C, First Batallion, 168th Infantry in Denison. After serving a year in Egypt with the unit, Byers returned home and volunteered for duty with the Company B 224th Engineering Batallion, based in Ottumwa.
