And now, for a story about a fish that didn’t get away. Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural resources say a Bellevue, Nebraska, man is the new record holder for the largest channel catfish ever caught in Iowa. A 38-pound, two-ounce catfish caught about a mile south of Lake Manawa in Pottawattamie County was reeled in June 11th, by Dustin Curtis. Curtis, who fished from the bank of the river, used a creek chub to tempt the mighty 40-inch fish. After the weight of the creature was verified by a state park manager, it was sent to a sporting goods store in Kansas City where it was kept on display in an aquarium. The stress of transportation took it’s toll on the catfish though, and it died the next day. The old record for a channel catfish caught in Iowa, was set by Ron Goodwin, of Earlham, when he caught a 36-pound eight ouncer from the Middle Raccoon River, in 1993.
