Former Drake coach Gary Garner was among those honored at the Tom Davis Golf Classic at the Tournament Club of Iowa on Thursday. Garner guided the Bulldogs from 1981 through 1988 and led them to the N-I-T on two occasions. Garner is entering his seventh season as the head coach at Southeast Missouri State and back in 2000 led the school to its first NCAA Tournament. He says he thinks they’re going to have a good team this year and have a chance to make a run at the league title.Under Garner Drake posted a record of 17-14 in the 1986-87 season, that’s the last time the program posted a winning record. As the current Drake coach, Davis hopes to snap the string of non-wining seasons. Davis says the community has been good and he says they’ve done a lot to upgrade the schedule. He says he thinks they’ve done a good job in recruiting and says on paper they look good, but you can’t tell until a few years down the road. Davis says the outing is designed to promote basketball as well as the Drake program. Davis will be entering his third season as the Bulldog coach.
