Scores of people are “chipping away” at their favorite pursuit today, at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in Davenport. They’re part of the International Woodcarvers Expo. Woodcarver Bob Meyers of Manchester was carving a Civil War soldier out of a piece of wood. He says when he started going south for winter he met some other fellows at a retirement park who were carving. He says many start out with a small project like an animal, and there are a lot of books about it. “You just have to sit down and do it,” he says, “and you find out pretty quickly if you’ve got any talent for it or not.” Another carver is Neil Cox of Toronto, Canada. He was asked if carving is his work, or hobby.”Both,” he replies without hesitation. He explains it has all the stress of a profession, combined with a satisfaction that comes with the work. The Woodcarvers Expo runs through Sunday.
