State Health officials are again recommending you use mosquito repellent to ward off the pesky bugs and the diseases they carry such as the West Nile virus. State Epidemiologist Patricia Quinlisk says there are two new repellents that’ve been approve by the F-D-A. She says one is picardin and oil of lemmon eucalyptus. She says it’s her understanding they will only be coming in one concentration and my not be readily available in Iowa yet. Quinlisk says oil of lemmon cannot be used on children under the age of three. Quinlisk says repellents containing the chemical “DEET” may still be the best bet, and those come in forms that have several different concentrations. She says you want to wear the lowest concentration that will still give you protection. She says concentration is how long the repellent lasts, not how well it works. She says if you’re going to be out camping for a long time, you want a high concentration. Quinlisk says you don’t have to dip your whole body into the repellent for it to be effective. She says the thing to remember is to cover as much of your skin as possible with clothing, and then cover exposed areas with repellent. She says you should was off any repellent once you come inside and are no longer in danger of being bitten. Quinlisk says be very careful in putting repellent on your kids. She says you don’t want to get it in their eyes or mouth. She says if you have a child that might be bitten on the face, you can put a cap on them and put some repellent on their cap. Quinlisk says you should avoid putting repellent on any open cuts or sunburn blisters.
